Artist Statement

I have always enjoyed making art. It has been an extension of how I express myself for so long I can not imagine my life without art in it. When I was a child I had a hard time in school because I was dyslexic and had other learning disabilities it made succeeding academically in school arduous. I turned to art because it was a way for me to excel and after that I was hooked. My mother would spend hours with me going over lessons every day and after it was all done we would do some kind of art project it became a way to relieve stress and a reward for hard work. Thanks to her help I went on to college and graduate school. But we had a special way of communicating through art. Now I try to communicate with others with my art.

I enjoy things that are impermanent I find things that only exist for a short period of time to be some of the most wonderful things in this world. Flowers, broken down decaying walls, a landscape, trees, these are all things that inspire me. In the world we live in I feel things change so quickly that catching the moment where it was once so beautiful is my goal. My first love in art was ceramics, my second and third loves are photography and metalsmithing. I like to take the techniques I have learned in these mediums and use them in my art. Ceramics made me conscious of how things feel when you interact with them. Photography made me conscious for how art looks and the best angles to show them. Metalsmithing has made me very conscious how art works and interacts with people. I make my work so I can capture those ideas and translate them in to my projects catching that moment of impermanence and imperfection in all of its beauty.
